PostSubject: Possible Solutions for Startup Crashes   Fri Feb 27, 2015 3:43 am

Yeah, Heyho, Noob CBer here.

I had the same problems with the game crashing without starting that many others had, so I would say we start compiling the Solutions in one Thread and ask a Mod to sticky it : /

I encoutered a problem that did not care about Anti-Alias or anything, which was related to the "Driver downgrade" solution.

Apparently, modern drivers (specifically those from AMD, no idea about the others) do not install a certain .dll file called "atioglxx.dll" which Cosmic Break NEEDS. I found this out after checking some of the error-logs and after downloading the .dll and putting it into the CosmicBreak programs Folder the game worked flawlessly (outside of some lags)

Did not know if I should put this kinda info into this section, if the Thread is against the rules just delete it :/.

Thanks for the tip. Found some info on the steam forum, so I guess I'll compile what you wrote and what I found.

This fix works for Windows version below Windows 10. Please look further down for Windows 10 discussion.

AMD Cards.
1: Go to http://support.amd.com/en-us and get the driver for your specs.
2: The program will extract its content somewhere, usually in C:/AMD, extract then cancel the install.
3: Navigate to C:\AMD\WhateverItPutHere\Packages\Drivers\Display\XXXXX\B######
4: Locate atioglxx.dl_ and open it with 7zip or similar program.
5: Extract the atioglxx.dll file to CB Programs folder.

I've tried two versions of the dll from 14.4 and 14.12.
The one from 14.12 does not work for me, but the older dll from 14.4 works just fine.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzLPFksVB7y4WEpnYmtzVXR0R2M/view?usp=sharing
This is the atioglxx.dll file from 14.2 for my system. It may or may not be compatible with your system, but it's worth a shot.

Downgrade Drivers
If you've recently upgraded your drivers and stuff, downgrade and stuff. It may be possible to start the game with the driver uninstalled.
1: Uninstall Driver or downgrade to an older version.
2: Launch Game
3: Turn on Anti Aliasing
4: Reinstall your normal drivers.

I used this method since I was tweaking settings anywayas.

Use an existing Options File
Make sure to back-up first.
1: Download an existing option.ser with anti-aliasing turned on.
2: Put that in your cosmic break's programs folder

You can download the option.ser file I've prepared here. Anti Aliasing has been turned on and set to x2. Window mode, 800x600 resolution and several other stuff.
https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=0BzLPFksVB7y4UWtoZ09wT1djOTg
Note: Do not share your own options file as it contains your login information.
Please share the above link to anyone that needs help.
Make sure you go in and edit all the settings except for anti-aliasing.

That's all I got so far.

Also note: You do not need to do all of these. Just try them one at a time until you get one that lets you run the game. Getting the atioglxx.dll seems to be the best option.

Windows 10
If you're on Win10, you do not need to do any of these. Just update to the latest drivers.
Stage editor is broken.

It was the anti-aliasing for me.  Thanks for the settings file; you're a king.

New problem, though:  I'm getting 1-2 seconds of the game client freezing every minute or so in arena.  Any ideas?

Change your Memory setting to M and put Thread optimization ticked. Restart after that.

This isn't a guarantee that it'd fix the problem but it did work for me.

I'll try that. While you're here, what's the "performance" setting for? Is "high" prettier but slower? Or the other way around?

(Also, how much of this would matter? My PC is a beast).

To be honest, I really have no idea what the setting does. All I know is that you should have a hefty amount of RAM in your pc if you'd like use the L or XL settings. I have 8GB of ram and L-XL settings just won't cut it.

Either way, CB is just a ram whore hogger.

It's Java, 'course it's gonna hog a load of memory.

That said, I have 32GiB; XL should be just fine.

I'd still recommend using the M setting rather than XL. CB has bad coding in some updates. Some like this one.

I can't say for sure if the game's even compatible with Windows 10 to begin with.

Can confirm that works. It wasn't the case a week ago, though.

OMG THANK YOU! I got to experience some weabuu nostalgia thanks to the option file! Nothing else worked... and I assume the reason why the decline of CB happened is because CB GM's couldn't make this basic updates to their own installation to include an option file like this that puts AnY computer at usable settings. It took me 3 days to find this, so many other broken option file links to go through.. I assume most other people who got upgraded computers and systems stopped at day 2 and sooner...

Yeah, a good rule of thumb is: for every person that asks for help, five others needed it but didn't ask.

Given the plethora of posts in this section, most of which are easily solved with an options.ser file or the ati dll, I don't know why the CBEN GMs never stickied a post on their official forum with instructions on how to get the game running.

It's almost like they don't even care.

For people using Windows 10, stage editor is broken. I haven't found a solution.
Post in page one has been edited with more info so people won't have to go digging.

I installed the new AMD RADEON thing since they got rid of the Catalyst Center and wasn't able to get onto CB. I did what you wrote in this tutorial and am now able to play again!
